APPLICATION
NOTES
Our products have been
developed in order to offer a complete 'one stop shop' for all your
joystick control requirements. Our standard product lines have been
designed in such a way that they meet industry requirements, but we
retain flexibility to tailor them to suit specific needs.
Product Overview.
The
product catalogue currently contains four product series.
- 1000
Series - panel mounted single step switch joysticks.
- 4000
Series - panel mounted, industrial quality, potentiometer
joysticks.
- 5000
Series - low cost potentiometer joysticks.
- 9000
Series - panel mounted, low profile contactless
joysticks.
|
The
following recently launched products will be included into the new
product catalogue:
- 3000
Series - Contactless / hall effect joysticks with the latest
technology and smallest installed depth.
- 8000
Series - Rugged switch joysticks aimed at heavier duty
environments.
My application
only requires control of single speed, so should I choose the 1000
or the 8000 Series?
For
applications where single step, directional on/off switching is
required the 1000 Series is the ideal choice. This range of low
cost, yet robust panel mounted joysticks offers the ability to
switch 5A, 10A or up to 15A in any one direction
and can be configured with an open gate allowing two switches to be
activated simultaneously, (e.g. to a North-East movement) Typically
the 1000 Series might be used in machine control style applications
whereby the user is directing the machine to predetermined
positions at fixed speed. (e.g. - CCTV applications, machine tool
control, overhead warehouse gantries.)
The above panel appearance of the 1000 series may be customised
using either screw (1000-V), or bush (1000-D) mounting, and a range
of fully interchangeable handles and accessories.
Apem also produce a
larger more rugged switch joystick, the 8000 series joysticks are
based on the proven mechanics of the 9000 Series, these joysticks
utilise high quality microswitches to provide a range of
possible outputs, including the option of progressive switching on
a single axis for dual speed control.
The 8000 Series is ideal
for more rugged and hard working applications then the 1000 Series
would be used for. This family of robust
joysticks also has a large variety of configurations including
variants of switching, limiter, handle and bezel options.

1000
SERIES 8000
SERIES
My application requires
proportional control, so should I choose the 4000, the 5000,
or the 3000
Series?
The main difference between these product series is to be found in
the method of positional sensing employed by the joystick. Whereas
the 4000 and 5000 Series both employ potentiometers, the 3000
joysticks are contactless, hall effect sensing units.
If potentiometers are the desired sensing then the 4000 Series
offers high end performance and a truly robust mechanism, whereas
the 5000 Series offers a solution that is engineered for lower
cost.
If contactless sensing is required then the 3000 Series offers the
latest solution and replaces the older 7000 Series and 9000
Series.
The potentiometer based 4000
Series may be chosen where the following are requirements
-
- Extremely rugged all
metal mechanism
- May be
used over the widest range of applied voltage.
- Exceptional versatility
of configuration.
- Greatest
versatility of installation options.
- Very
long life through use of high quality of conductive plastic film
potentiometers.
- May be
customised with the widest range of handles and
functions.
|

The potentiometer based 5000
Series may be chosen where the following are requirements
-
- Joystick
functionality at the lowest possible cost.
- A
shallow installed depth.
- The
joystick is not exposed to an external environment.
|

The
contactless 3000
Series has
been recently released to replace our older models the 7000 and
9000 series, it offers -
- Shallow
installed depth (Truly class leading depth, <19mm below
panel)
- Metal
ball-pivot mechanism (Tested to withstand far greater forces than
older generations)
- Low
voltage 3.3V options
- PWM
output options
- Dual
(redundant) output options (with either the same or inverted
polarity)
- Centre
detect output
- Hall
effect sensing (Latest technology, a reduced part count and an ease
of integration)
- High EMC
Immunity (Integral shielding)
- Pre-wired (with cables
and connectors)
- Significantly reduced
part count (the vastly simplified design assures reliability over
life)
- Many
more configuration options
- and
many, many more handle
options
